Why your role matters
The new Senior Capability and Engagement Advisor position will sit within the UNSW National Security Team, which leads the University’s efforts to assist UNSW academic staff with navigating the complexities of international engagements and research agreements.
The role entails providing relevant advice on issues related to foreign interference and geopolitical risk, research security, dual-use and critical technologies, UN and Australian Autonomous sanctions, and defence trade controls.
About You:
As the Senior Capability and Engagement Advisor you will support a whole-of-University approach to national security risk education, awareness, and culture setting. You will have a keen interest in geopolitics and excel at managing multiple projects. You will need to be proactive and resourceful;be able to identify knowledge gaps; and develop information or training to address these effectively. More specifically you will have:
- High level interpersonal and verbal communication skills to work independently and forge strong and trusted relationships with a broad range of stakeholders, with a proven ability to handle sensitive or confidential information.
- Relevant tertiary qualification with subsequent relevant experience or equivalent competence gained through any combination of education, training and experience.
- Strong demonstrated understanding of international relations and Australian foreign and defence policy settings, and a base understanding of sanctions, critical technologies in the national interest and University Foreign Interference Taskforce guidelines.
- Advanced written communication skills with an ability to distil complex information into clear, concise guidance.
- Demonstrated analytical, assessment and problem-solving skills with the ability to make informed risk recommendations, ideally in a geopolitical environment.
- Successful candidates require a willingness and ability to apply for and maintain an Australian NV1 (or higher) security clearance.
