Why Your Role Matters:
As Payroll Accountant, you will provide guidance and accounting expertise to strengthen UNSW’s payroll function capability; delivering data insights, preparing reconciliations and reports and conducting audits that keep our processes compliant

Embedded as part of the People Services team, you will support the delivery of high‑quality payroll practices, ensuring compliance with Australian legislation, Enterprise Agreements, and internal policies. Offering a solutions‑focused approach to navigate payroll complex payment calculations and discrepancies, overseeing their resolution and mitigation.

Reporting to the Head of People Services, you’ll bring your sound knowledge across payroll regulations, tax obligations and regulatory changes, to play an essential role in the payroll team’s collaborative delivery of sustainable pay confidence.

Your typical day would be:

  • Reviewing end-to-end payroll activities in accordance with regulation account standards, overseeing complex calculations and adjustments.
  • Applying and interpreting relevant legislation, Enterprise Agreements and internal policies accurately to ensure sustainable pay confidence.
  • Managing and resolving complex enquiries or issues, including employee matters, system behaviour, payments, timelines for delivery, non-compliance matters, ensuring alignment with sustainable pay confidence
  • Overseeing internal control frameworks including payroll policies and performance metrics to ensure payroll activities are executed efficiently, risks are proactively mitigated and continuous improvement achieved across the payroll function.

Who You Are: We’re looking for a CA/CPA qualified accounting professional with an understanding of payroll services and legislation in a large and complex corporate environment, bringing the perspective and understanding that is required to work with diverse stakeholders in this dynamic team environment. You will hold the following skills & experience:

  • Tertiary qualification in a relevant discipline, CA or CPA qualification (or equivalent), with subsequent relevant experience or equivalent competence gained through any combination of education, training and experience.
  • Extensive and up-to-date knowledge of Australian payroll and tax legislation
  • Strong reconciliation and analytical skills.
  • Extensive understanding of general ledger, accruals, and accounting principles.
  • Experience with award interpretation and enterprise agreements.
  • Exposure to multi-entity or large workforce payroll environments.
  • Effective communication with internal and external stakeholders, including the ability to explain payroll concepts in a clear, simple and pleasant manner.
  • Demonstrated experience in providing superior customer service to support stakeholders at different levels and leading the team in providing this service
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain effective stakeholder relationships, incorporating feedback to improve services
  • Proven success in managing escalated issues and resolving complex matters
  • Proficient in Oracle payroll and HRIS products
  • Strong knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office products
  • High attention to detail and level of accuracy while working in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information
